For those of you considering cycling to or from the event on the shared paths or PSP network, there are some laws and etiquette you should know.

Rules for riding a bike

Whether you are a competitive bike rider, or someone who commutes to work regularly or occasionally for fitness or recreation, whatever the purpose, you all have the same rights and responsibilities when riding on roads and shared paths.

The number of people in this year’s HBF Freeway Bike Hike for Asthma could exceed 10,000 with many using shared paths and roads to get back home. It is crucial that everyone follows the rules to avoid accidents. The most important of these are:

  • You must ride in single file on paths at all times. Ride no more than two abreast on roads.
  • You must give way to pedestrians at all times.
  • You must keep left on a path unless overtaking.
  • If riding along a road that has a bike lane or sealed shoulder, you must use it rather than the road itself.
  • You must wear a helmet.
You should also:

  • Ring your bell to alert other path users of your presence when approaching them from behind.
  • Overtake other path users with plenty of room to spare – at least one metre of clearance.
  • Ride at a speed that enables you to stop quickly if required.

Details of your rights and responsibilities and other tips can be found here and here.
